FOLK MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS OF NEPAL

Along with folk songs, various musical instruments are also played in different festivals, jatras, and ceremonies in Nepal. Like songs, musical instruments also differ according to place, race, religion and culture. A brief introduction of musical instruments played in Nepal are given below:

Madal: Madal is one of the most popular musical instruments of the Nepalese community. This musical instrument was played first by Magar community. Later on, it grained popularity throughout the country. Madal is made by making hollow (big hole) in a peace of thick log in its two corner and cover with the skin. Madal is carried around the waist and played by the both hands.

Sarangi: Sarangi is the traditional musical instrument of Gandarva community of Kaski district. Sarangi is made of the khiri wood. There are four wires and played by rubbing on the wire. The people of Gandarva community play this instrument along with the song they compose about the various incidents that happened in the country of Nepal.

Flute (Bansuri / Murali): Flute is made by making a hole in a small peace of bamboo. Flute is also practiced throughout the country. Bansuri or Murali is played by blowing air with our mouth.

Jhyili/Jhyamta/Jhurma: Jhyali / Jhyama / Jhurma is one of the musical instruments of Panchai Baja. Jhyali/Jhyama/Jhurma is made of the bronze metal. Jhyali/Jhyama/Jhurma is played with our both hands.

Narasingha: Narasingha is one of the musical instruments of Panchai Baja and made of copper. Narasingha is long and carved like a half circle.

Sankha: Sankha is made up of large shell of the insect found in the sea and ocean. Sankha is played by blowing air with our mouth. Sankha is played during puja and other religious ceremonies of the Hindus. Sankha is also blown when dead body is taken to the ghat for cremation.

Khainchandi: Khainchandi is made of wood surrounded by the skin and played when Roila, Balana, etc songs and sung. Khainchandi is also played during Bhajan-kirtan by the Hindus.

Sahanai: Sahanai is also a part of Panchai Baja. Sahanai is made of metal and played by blowing air with our mouth.

Pungi: Pungi is made of the bark of coconut and bamboo. Pungi is played in the terai to show the snake dance.

Tunga: Tunga is the popular musical instrument used in Himalaya region. Tunga is made of the wood of Rhododendron and have four wires like Sarangi.

Yalamber: Yalamber is made of bamboo with two wires. Yalamber is used by Kirant community.

Ekatara: Ekatara is used by the sages and ascetics. Ekatara is made of wood and leather.

Nagara/Damaha: Nagara/Damaha is also one of the musical instruments of Panchai Baja. Nagara/Damaha is made of copper surrounded by the leather.

Urni: Urni is used by Dhimal community and made of the bark of coconut, skin and stick.

Dhol/Dholak: Dhol/Dholak is made of wood which is hollow inside and is covered by the leather.

Tyamko: Tyamko is also a part of Panchai Baja. It is like a Nagara but small in size.

Dhyangro: Dhyangro is used by witch doctor like Dhami-jhankri and made of wood and leather.

Hudko: Hudko is like a Damaru and used in Mid-Western and Far-Western region.

Binayo: Binayo is most popular among the Kiranti people and made by making a hole in a piece of bamboo and thread.

Murchunga: Murchunga is made of iron and it produces the sound like Binayo. Murchunga is also practiced among Kiranti people.

Masak: Masak looks like Sarangi and is used in Bajhang district.

Dafali: Dafali is used in the terai region of Mid-West and made of the leather.

Phasmuk: Phasmuk is used in Limbu community and made of three pieces of bamboo.

Pung: Pung is made of the horn of an ox and is popular among the Kiranti community of Solu area.

Dakkrai: Dakkrai is used in Mithila area and is made of wood joining six wires.

Irlung Pipari: Irlung Pipari is used in Kusunda community and played by blowing.

Shringinad: Shringinad is made of the horn of Krishnasar and is used by the sages.

Damphu: Damphu musical instrument is used in Tamang community and made by covering the wood with leather.
